I avoid the red pen altogether . . using pencil, blue, black, green, crayon, whatever happens to be handy. This semester, I'm using a tape recorder, and I'm emailing audio files to students. We'll see how THAT goes.
I don't use actual red pens either. I grade in pencil. But the metaphorical red pen nonetheless totally ruined my day. I'd rather see dead birds than metaphorical red pens. :)
Scrivener & Billie - it's funny you mention that because I only started using a red pen last year (or the year before?). I always used a funky green gel pen before. I'm not sure why I went to red - maybe a subconscious desire for traditional authority. Perhaps I'll go back to the green.
Liane - I'm glad you like the DOF. I tried to make it almost readable, but to let you see what I wrote would give away part of my secret identity! :)

It's only January, and already with the red pen? I was trying not to think about the red pen for another week or two. Thanks.

Nice pic, though. I really like the DOF.

i really like this photo & your use of the shallow depth-of-field...gets me wondering (& trying to figure out) what you wrote!!
